We've been new places, too. We know that it can be intimidating and awkward - especially when looking for a church home. Here are some common questions people ask, and hopefully it will make your first visit easier.
|
| What are the services like? |
We have a friendly atmosphere, where we teach from the Bible with the intent of allowing it to make a real difference in each of our lives outside of the church building and throughout the week. We use multimedia, videos, and music in both of our distinct services.
Our 9:00 worship service incorporates hymns led by piano and vocalists, in a more structured setting.
Our 10:30 service is a more casual atmosphere where we worship with a worship band, using songs you might hear on Christian radio today.
|
| What are the people like? |
Like you. We encourage our attendees to strive to be real - to be authentic. The folks at DHC come from a variety of backgrounds and walks of liffe, and you'll find that people are at different places in their spiritual journeys.
Above all, the DHC congregation is like a family. Many of our members express that while they don't have blood relatives in the Mesa area, they do have family here.

| Do I have to stand up in front of people? |
No! That's the pastor's job. We do not point out our visitors, make them wear name tags, or embarrass them in any way. In fact, we ALL wear name tags that look the same which makes it easier for all of us to get to know each other. We tend to have new people join us every week!
|
| What do I wear? |
Whatever you like. Some of the people wear suits and dresses, some wear shorts, others wear jeans. However you prefer to come to worship generally fits in. |
| What is the music like? |
That depends on the service you attend. At our 9:00 service, the music involves the great hymns of the faith and some standard praise choruses.
At our 10:30 service, you will hear a wide variety including Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Tommy Walker, MercyMe, Casting Crowns, Third Day, and others. If you listen to 88.7, 89.9, 89.1, or 105.5 during the week before you join us, many of the songs should be familiar to you.
|
| What about my kids? What do they do? |
Our Kid's Church takes place during our 10:30 service. If you have an infant, you can bring them to the nursery (just to the right after you enter the front doors) and the nursery attendants will care for your child during the service. You can even get a pager if you want to be notified if your child is upset. Some people prefer to keep their infants with them during the services, and that is just fine, too.
For preschool aged students to 6th grade students, they should go into the worship center with you. After the first couple songs, we have a Children's Message, which is a chance for the children to go up with Miss Kara or Miss Charlotte for a short participatory experience in the front of the church. After that, they go to Kid's Church, an upbeat, hands-on Bible class applicable to their age group. After the service, you can pick them up in their classrooms, located down the hall from the nursery.
Some children prefer to stay with their parents, and that's just fine. They generally get more out of the Kid's Church experience, but we know some children can be shy, and many parents are, too!
|
| How much time do you spend talking about money? |
Not much. We like to talk about Jesus.
|
| Why do you want my money? |
Actually, we don't. We do take an offering for our regular attendees so we can do the ministries that bless the people in our community and in our world. We also use them to pay our expenses such as the building loan and electric bills. We have found that our regular attendees are blessed by being able to partner in these exciting ministries.
We don't mandate giving, nor do we expect you to participate when you're visiting.
|
| Will any religious beliefs be forced on me? |
No. While we a part of a denomination (Reformed Church in America,) many of our members have various theological backgrounds. Some are former adherants to atheism or agnosticism, some folks are from backgrounds from the Baptist church to the Catholic church, and so forth. Just like anywhere in "the real world," everyone doesn't agree on everything, but most of our family members agree on the real important stuff. While we are unapologetic in presenting the Bible as the Bible is and the Truth of God as pure truth, we encourage people to explore what the Bible says and to dialogue and ask questions.
We hope that our worship services and bible studies are places where people find a safe place to explore their spirituality and through that, seek to grow to be more Christlike in life and heart. |
